What if you could get a workout just by wearing a piece of jewelry?
Two main line moms had that very question in mind when they put their heads (and creative spirits) together to create Banglz, a company offering a variety of weighted, colorful fashion accessories to give the wearer a resistance workout while he or she goes through his or her regular day.
“We were looking for something to add to our daily routine that would help our fitness,” Koelle said. “We were looking for a way to take advantage of what we already do rather than adding something new to our day.”
The Online shop www.Banglz.com opened for business in September of 2007 and they were sold out before Christmas.
“Most people don’t realize how important muscle maintenance is to your overall health,” Ulichney said. “It can have a huge impact on protecting your joints.”
Also, she said, creating new, lean muscle “helps you burn more calories every day.”
Banglz come in many patterns, but also they come in various levels of resistance, including 3 types of wrist weights (1/4 lb, the popular 1/2 lb and 1lb for Walkers), and ankle weights (1/2 lb, 1lb and 2 lbs).
We have researched a lot, said Koelle.” Annie’s husband is a Doctor and he has pulled up a of of research on the benefits of resistance against the muscle.
“If you are using some sort of weight resistance, you can increase your metabolism by 15 percent,” added Ulichney. “For a 2,000 calorie diet, you’re burning 300 more calories a day. Each new pound of lean muscle burns 50 calories a day.”

For Ulichney and Koelle, the most important thing is getting people interested in fitness by introducing it in a way that everyone- no matter their level of busyness- can participate in.
